What they are saying is a master plasterer can finish trowell off so well that additional "polishing"is not necessary.
In the drywall trades, polishing can mean fine finish sanding or wet wiping of joints.
Would'nt say it is bad , but if you can learn how to plaster so well that it is not necessary then you can call those who must "amateurs"

If he goes to college he can get them to put him on a placement, with an employer, a lot of employers are happy to accept older candidates as they are more committed.
