Teaching English Certificate

Cindy Said:

I have my English teaching certificate in Illinois. How can I become certified in Wisconsin?

We Answered:

Go to Wisconsin's Department of Education and look up "Reciprocity". Most State's will honor other State's credentials. Good luck.

Allan Said:

Is there such a thing as a reputable yet affordable English teaching certificate?

We Answered:

With disregard to the cost, you should go for any ESL certificate, as long as they are more than 100 hrs. Anything less than a 100 hr. certificate will not be accepted by some countries such as S. Korea. TESOL is North American, and CELTA is British. Some former British colonies such as Malaysia, Hong Kong, etc, are very particular and only prefer you to have a CELTA rather than a TESOL. It's your choice of which countries you would to teach in for the future.

Jeffery Said:

Do I need some kind of certificate to teach English in Japan?

We Answered:

Visa issue aside, NO you do not.

This means IF you are already here in Japan legally and "speak English at the level of a native speaker", you will be able to get a job.

Need an example? Take a look-

Ota, Gunma Prefecture is also looking for those who "speak English at the level of a native speaker" for a new project to have classes taught by native English speakers.

There is always a need for English teachers here in Japan.
Many native speaker/teachers leave after their contracts and must be replaced.

?And NOVA is still in operation people!?
Their TV CM runs daily.
Take a look, they've slashed prices:
https://www.gcom-nova.jp/form/index.shtm…
They're hiring as well and only require "a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university" IF you'll need a working visa.
If you don't, they'll still hire you.

Take a look:
?What qualifications are necessary?
The minimum qualification is to have completed at least 1 to 2 years of tertiary education. If you want us to arrange a working visa for you then you’ll need to have, or be expecting to receive, a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.

?I hope you don't let the negative comments get you down.
If it's your plan/hope to teach here, by all means try it.
I'm an American and have lived in Japan a long time, many of the English teachers I've met have NO teaching certificate.
I get asked constantly here in Tokyo; "Would you teach me English?"

?Good luck and I hope this helps!?

Allen Said:

I want to earn a certificate for teaching english as a second/foreign language. Which is/are the best to get?

We Answered:

Depends on where you live.

CELTA is probably the best. LCCI and Trinity/RSA are also very good.

Most countries offer their own version of the CELTA and you will have to check this out - the best place to look is the dept of educations website - they usually have a section on teacher accreditation.

In Ireland, it has to be ACELS approved (and you have to have obtained a primary degree (in any subject) first.

Online programmes are limited in that they don't offer classroom practice - which is essential for any reputable qualification. Most schools will not take on someone who has not been observed teaching in front of a class. Schools who do take on unproven teachers usually pay badly and are in general a bit dodgy. All of the reputable TEFL courses have at least 6 hours of observed teaching practice.

Kevin Said:

Which teaching English certificate is most aimed at teaching abroad?

We Answered:

Any decent TEFL certificate with help here.

TEFL = Teaching English as a Foreign Language
