Primary School Teaching Course

Betty Said:

So if I go to uni and do undergrad course in primary teaching will I be qualified primary school teacher?

We Answered:

If you have experience now that should make getting into uni easier, it shoulldn't matter whether you're a mature student or not.

You will become a qualified teacher, but only if the courses gives you QTS (qualified teacher status)
Check it does, becasue some don't.

Terri Said:

question about a Masters course in primary school teaching?

We Answered:

Not necessarily. I not 100% sure about the U.S but I know in the U.K you can do an undergraduate degree in whatever you like. And if you want too you can go a postgraduate degree called a PGCE (postgraduate certificate in education) and that enables you to be a teacher. Either of whatever subject your undergraduate was. So she could teach like Business studies in a high school or you can do a PGCE in primary studies.

It is perfectly feasible loads of people do PGCE's to become teachers. It's just an easier way of getting into the field.

Louise Said:

Would volunteering at a primary school for 2 hours a week help me to get into into a Primary teaching course?

We Answered:

yes of course-it shows willing on your part and a determination to get into school. It will however also help you understand how schools work on a different level. You will begin seeing things through a teachers eyes and watch both how control, behaviour, assessment, planning, teaching, differentiation and special needs works.
You will see from a distance the workings of a classroom and of course if you make a good impression you could be setting up yourself for a job in that school when you have trained.
One suggestion though, if you arrange to go in on a Friday morning you will only see what happens on Friday mornings. The lessons, etc etc will be the same. I recommend that you do maybe six weeks on one day and time then another at another day and time so you get experience of the whole curriculum and school week.

Good luck

Amanda Said:

i want to study primary school teaching?

We Answered:

Yes but you will need training. Here's a link for a university in Birmingham which has quite a good reputation. Go to the courses section and I'm sure there are loads of teaching courses. You don't even need to get A* for your a-levels so the fact that you have a degree already is brilliant.

Audrey Said:

what are the name of teaching courses? like primary school teaching courses for uk unis?

We Answered:

There are basically 2 ways into primary teaching.
1. (In my opinion the best for primary) You do a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) which takes 4 years. This type of course puts the stress on teaching techniques, classroom management, education law and good practice, etc. You do have to choose some specialised subjects and I would suggest opting for science subjects, physics, biology, etc., but along with these you will learn how to approach the teaching of English, Maths., and other curriculum subjects. The reason I suggest sciece as options is because questions asked by curious primary aged children are usually of a scientific nature, such as, for example, "What causes stitch?" "Why do we hiccup?" "How do my glasses work?" "Why do the wheels on some vehicles on tv films seem to be going backwards?" (I've had all these asked and millions more like them in my 40+ years in primary teaching.)
2. The alternative is to do a subject degree to gain a B.Sc. or a B.A., taking 3 years and then you would have to do a P.G.C.E. (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) before you would be allowed to teach.
Without a doubt, the best route for primary teaching is route 1; for secondary teaching it would be route 2 as you need a subject degree in order to teach at secondary schoo.

Reading List for a Student studying Primary School Teaching?

We Answered:

Haven't your course tutors sent you a reading list? I'm due to start my Secondary teaching course and we got a list of books to read.

Try looking on amazon and I'm sure you'll find plenty of books for teaching primary, class behaviour, teaching D&T and German.

Glen Said:

Uni interview tomorrow....for primary school teaching course?

We Answered:

Hi I had my primary PGCE interview two weeks ago, and just got accepted on Monday.

I got asked:
Why do you want to teach?
How have you prepared for the course?
What literature have you read?
Identify and discuss an educational issue that is of interest to you?
How important is it that there are good relations between staff and children, and how can you promote this in a school?
What are you doing for your presentation today, and why?
How relevant/useful is your degree for teaching in a primary school?
What work experience do you have in schools, and what have you learnt from it?
How would you deal with a very disruptive child in your lesson?
Do you have any questions which you'd like to ask?

Discuss It!
