Nursing Online Education

Misty Said:

What do you think of online college degrees?

We Answered:

There aren't a lot of online choices for a bachelor's degree in nursing from start to finish. The challenge is that you have to do a lot of hours in a nursing program in clinical settings and there's just no easy way to do that online.

That said, there are some very good online programs for people who are already RN (or even LPN) from diploma and associates programs who want to progress to the bachelor's level. There are also some very good master's level programs.

These require that you already have some level of certification and that you have a place to practice your skills (ie: you work in a patient care setting).

If you pick a regionally accredited school (and in nursing you'll also need professional accreditation) then you'll find that online coursework is actually harder than the in-the-class counterpart. The online class only changes the venue and not the material covered - nursing is one of those things that is best learned (most often) in the practical lab environment.

Make sure the school you're looking at is accredited (regionally and professional) and that your state will accept a degree from that school as eligibility to take the nursing exams before you spend any time or money.

Nursing Education and Careers?

We Answered:

i am a nursing student. i go to school in new york. it is really a great career to get into, it is in high demand, it pays well, and it really gives you a good feeling knowing you are helping others.
online classes would not be a good choice because although there is a lot of reading involved you need experience in an actual hospital setting.
my classes are very cool
i have certain days where i am in a classroom for lecture and other days where i have clinical and i actually take care of patients in a hospital
there are so many different areas a nurse can work in and that is not something to think about now. as you get experience and really understand what nursing is about, you will know where you want to be.
working in a hospital will give you a feel for the setting itself but you wont be performing tasks that nurses do. but it is definitely good for networking. also some hospital programs may pay for you to go to college or earn your degree at their program. you should find out by searching online and calling.
good luck

Is there a cheap, good online nursing program?

We Answered:

Yes, there are accredited on line nursing programs...however, the clinicals are rough. (Clinical is where you shouw your practice...taking care of a real patient). Usually in a group of 3 people, one to two people not pass. You can check into Regents program (aka: Excelsior) and University of Phoenix. Those are RN programs. Are you looking for a RN program or a LPN program? What changed your interest from elementary education to nursing? I am more than willing to answer any questions that you may have.
~I have been a RN simce 2006, before that I was a LPN (1999-2006) and before that I was a plebotomist (1998) and before that a CNA/PCA/home health aide (1996). I knew I wanted to be a nurse from age 14, but it did not happen for me until after I was 26.

Online nursing degree?

We Answered:

I'll be honest - don't use U of Phoenix. Any school that is "for profit" is not motivated by producing good student but rather making money. Similar schools are ITT Tech, DeVries, etc. Stay away from them all.

Your best bet is to find a regular college and see if they have online classes. For example, look at UCLA and see if they offer online degrees. That way you get a degree from a reputable school and potential employers will appreciate that more than something from U of Phoenix.

Good luck.
