How do home schooling laws apply for Distance Learning Schools?

We Answered:

Strictly speaking it is not homeschooling (certainly in my country it wouldn't legally count as home-education); it is just another private school the same as any other. And enrolling in it shouldn't be any different nor affect you anymore than enrolling in any other private school. It is a nationally accredited school so presumably massachusettes couldn't object; plus, whilst their website talks about 'what if we're going overseas?' but no mention of being out-of-state. One presumes if there were any legal requirements they would have mentioned something to that effect on their website.

ADDED: Could you post the page link where it says that (to check your state's home-ed laws)? The only remotely similar thing I could find was at the bottom of their homeschooling page where it says:
*Not sure of the homeschooling rules & regulations in your state? Find out! (linked to hslda).
That does not necessarily mean you need to consider yourself a homeschooler if you plan to enrol FULLTIME in Keystone; IMO it's more likely to be there for the benefit of homeschoolers who are considering taking just one or two additional courses through Keystone in order to supplement their own independent home-education. Or just a general link for those people who might be visiting Keystone because they are thinking of and investigating the possibilities of home-ed.

Have you contacted Keystone direct and asked them whether the states' homeschooling regulations apply if you enrol as a fulltime student with them???

Does anyone know of a distance learning school that's as good as Laurel Springs School?

We Answered:

Only Veritas' Scholars Academy ( http://resource2.veritaspress.com/Resour… ) and Scholars Online ( http://www.scholarsonline.org/Info/index… ). Neither is cheap though; but then you only ever get what you pay for, I reckon. If you want a quality product, you're going to have to pay for it one way or the other.

One other online school that I know nothing about but does come highly recommended by other private high schools is the University of Nebraska Lincoln High School ( http://highschool.unl.edu/index.shtml ). They've been offering high school by distance education since 1929 so they must (presumably) be doing something right!
