Depends on what you're going to use it for. It sounds like you have a fairly decent degree collection as it is but I'm not familiar with your industry. If it will help you get the specific job you want and you can't get a comparable job without it, then $18,000 isn't a bad investment. If you're doing it for something to do while being a SAHM because you're used to and comfortable with rigorous academics, it's not a good use of money.

I am a psychology student from Louisiana therefore I can not help you with schools in New York (although I had a Professor that received his Ph.D. from Syracuse.) In all 50 states the term PSYCHOLOGIST is protected, therefore to carry that title you need to have a license. Most, if not all, of the states designate the term psychologist for persons that have Ph.D./Psy.D. in a psychological concentration (Counseling, Industrial/Organizational, Clinical, Neuropsychology, or School Psychology). After a person has followed their requirements for licensure, they can go before their state licensing board. If they pass and are allowed to become a psychologist they can go practice in their field, but there are different rules for each state. There are usually a certain amount of hours that a person has to perform under the supervision of a licensed psychologist before they can practice alone. One way (in Louisiana) that a person can be called a psychologist but not be RELICENSED is by working for a higher educational institution, such as a college or university.

To obtain a doctorate you need to apply to a doctoral or masters program in a psychological concentration. To get into a program usually an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 is required (most people in a graduate programs have GPA’s around 3.0-4.0), and a GRE above 1000 (good programs have students whose average are around 1200, but the lowest entrance admission to a good graduate school I’ve seen is 900). If you apply to a masters program, then you will have to find a program in which to complete your doctorate. During the work on your masters you might have to complete a thesis, which is a large research paper on a psychological subject. When you being to work on your doctorate, you will work on a dissertation, which is like a thesis, but it is original work. If you go straight into a doctorate program, you will probably earn a masters degree on the way depending on the program.
